A Sign of a Sacred Thing

Of all the things that churches do in the name of Christ, few of them are seemingly direct orders or commands from Christ Himself who (Colossians 1:15-20) is the head of the church. There are volumes of books written about what church is supposed to do, what the mission is supposed to be, and who the church is for. Prints and reprints about the purpose of the church and our place in that purpose. But to me, it (the purpose of the church and our place in that purpose) blossoms out of obedience to the ordinances Christ Himself left for us. Those commands being only two and in addition, very simple.

The first is baptism. We baptized because Jesus was baptized and because He told us to be baptized as a sign of His working in our lives (Matthew 28:19-20). Second is The Lord’s Supper or Communion.

Initially observed at Passover while Jesus and His disciples were remembering the grace and mercy God showed upon the children of Israel, Christ chose to symbolically prove Himself as the sacrifice for the world. So it is, we drink of the cup and eat of the bread to remember the price that was paid for our life now and life in eternity that we cannot nor could not ever pay for ourselves.
